Vaginitis Information

Vaginitis is a kind of sexually transmitted disease caused by bacteria and the infection is contracted after sexual contact with another individual.

But there are nonsexual ways of getting infected with this disease.

What is Vaginitis?

It is an infection of the vagina. The vagina secretes certain special fluids to keep the area healthy. This discharge can vary in consistency and amount during a normal menstrual cycle. Sometimes, when you have a period or using a diaphragm, having sexual intercourse, being pregnant or being in a menopause can be associated with one of the commonest types of vaginitis- bacterial vaginitis, trichomoniasis and candidiasis.

Symptoms of Vaginitis

  • Burning pain
  • Itching, change in discharge or blood spotting.
  • Discharge can be heavier than usual, with unusual 'smelliness'
  • Different colour (brown, yellow,grey)
  • Consistency can be clumpy or thick.

If you think you have the following symptoms, go see a doctor. There is no need to be anxious as most women experience at least one type of this infection during their life. Avoid using a deodorant spray or douching as it may mask the odour or the discharge, making it difficult for your doctor to diagnose.

Treatment

Depending on the kind of infection contracted, your clinician will give the required medication, suppositories or cream to treat a case of vaginitis. Often you tend to have more than one kind at the same time. If your symptoms do not clear after a particular period, go back to the doctor and also take your partner to get him treated. Remember to complete the course even if the symptoms clear up even before the medication is over.

  • All kinds of vaginitis can be treated with antibiotics. Follow the doctor's instructions and be sure to take all the medicines prescribed.
